On a volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic, two solitary figures arrive carrying private fractures; as they surrender to the island’s elemental forces, their deepening connection to place becomes a catalyst for becoming, guiding them inward. In learning to listen and respond to the living land, they uncover truer versions of themselves – transformed from distant observers into living threads within a larger, vital whole, bound by care, attention, and thoughtful exchange.

VISION
Utilizing dream logic, field recordings, poetic vignettes, macro images of human and nature – the hum of the human and earth carries the vision forward.
Inspiration for this comes from storyteller Robert McFarlane’s questions of: What do I know when I am in this place that I can know nowhere else? What does this place know of me, that I can not know of myself? (The Old Ways)
Islandness is defined as a multifaceted concept describing the unique physical, cultural, and psychological characteristics shaped by an island’s isolation, small size, and watery boundaries, fostering a distinct sense of place, identity, and community resilience but also vulnerability. It’s a metaphysical sensation and construct of the mind resulting from this physical reality, influencing everything from socio-ecological systems to cultural practices, creating both unity and separateness.

STRUCTURE NOTE
The film moves in cycles, not acts. Scenes recur with variation. Sound bridges time. Cuts follow breath, tide, and footfall rather than causality.
The characters are never fully introduced. They are inhabitants, not protagonists.
VOICEOVER NOTE
The poem that carries the piece was written by Filipa Gomes, on set, at the end of the first day of filming, inspired by the time we spent together with the island and the elements.
MUSIC
The untitled song, that carries that film was written as an improvisational piece by Filipa Gomes, at the end of the day filming with the island – and is inspired by her connection that day to the island. The song, comprising 16 minutes, was arranged by Sarah Bachinger.
